The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics: Your Health Is Their Concern
Amidst the numerous product recalls of everything from cars to baby toys, have you ever wondered how safe your cosmetics are? Maybe not, but if you knew that the FDA didn’t regulate the ingredients in your cosmetics, would you then be concerned about their safety?
The truth is that the FDA doesn’t regulate the safety of cosmetics; they allow the cosmetic industry to police itself, and have no power to require product recalls or set stringent safety standards for beauty products.
One organization is trying to make cosmetics as safe as possible, and force cosmetic companies to take responsibility for the health and well-being of the consumers who use their products.

What Is the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics?
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is a coalition of non-profit organizations that works to fight for consumer’s rights and safety standards in the cosmetic industry. The coalition wants to phase out harmful chemicals used by cosmetics companies that have scientifically been linked to cancer, birth defects, and other health concerns, and replace these chemicals with safer alternatives.
Formed in 2004, founding coalition members include the National Environmental Trust, the Breast Cancer Fund, Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, and the Environmental Working Group. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is endorsed by over 100 other non-profit groups, including The American Fertility Association, Greenpeace, the National Council of Churches, the National Organization of Women, and the American Nurses Association.
